I sort of layer on the rendering, and use blending stumps, kneaded erasers and fingers to push the graphite around. Sometimes I'll use a piece of paper to help me "mask" an area.

Love this, bro. In quiet, mundane moments like this one, it really plants the characters in a real world environment, by doing this you make the big action scenes all the more effective.

Your putting in sufficient background detail to give a sense of place but not killing yourself with inordinate detail.

a mix of wooden and mechanical. "f" for wooden. .03 2H and .05 HB for mechanical.
